Demystifying Finances

Hate Numbers? Here’s How to Handle Business Finances (Without Stress)

Let’s talk about the thing most new entrepreneurs avoid like the plague…

Money.
Not making it—but tracking it, managing it, and staying on top of it.

If you’ve ever felt:

“I’m great at what I do… but the money stuff makes me panic.”
“I have no idea if I’m actually making a profit.”
“I just want someone to tell me what to do.”

You’re in the right place.

Today, I’m going to walk you through how to manage your business finances (without spreadsheets of doom or scary jargon).

First: You’re Not Bad With Money — You’ve Just Never Been Taught This

Especially if you’re:

  • Neurodivergent (autistic, ADHD, dyscalculic)
  • A non-native English speaker
  • Or someone who simply never had formal education around money

…it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed.

So let’s break this down into simple, doable steps.

✅ 4 Things Every Solo Business Owner Needs to Do With Money

1. Separate Personal and Business Finances

Open a dedicated business account (even a simple one, like Monzo or Starling Business).
This makes it so much easier to track what’s coming in and going out.

2. Track Income and Expenses (Super Simply)

You don’t need to be an accountant.

Use a simple tracker like:

✅ Log:

  • What you earn
  • What you spend (software, subscriptions, equipment, etc.)

Even checking it once a week for 5 minutes can transform your clarity and confidence.

3. Know Your Break-Even Number

This is the amount you need to make each month to cover your costs and pay yourself.

👉 Total monthly expenses (business + personal)
👉 Divide by how many clients or sales you need

📄 Example:
If your costs are £1,000/month and your offer is £250, you need 4 clients to break even.

Once you know that, everything becomes clearer—and less scary.

4. Put Aside 25% for Tax

Yep, tax. You don’t want to be surprised in April.

Even if you're not earning much yet, start the habit of setting aside 25% of each payment into a savings account. That way, you’ll never get caught short.

🛠️ Use an automatic saver like:

💬 A Note for Neurodivergent Business Owners

You might struggle with:

  • Time blindness
  • Task switching
  • Executive dysfunction

So try this:

  • Set a recurring reminder to check your money every Friday for 10 minutes
  • Use visual tools (graphs, dashboards) instead of raw numbers
  • Outsource bookkeeping early (yes, even if you're just starting)

👥 There are bookkeepers and virtual assistants who specialize in supporting neurodivergent clients. Want a list? Reply and I’ll send you a few names.
