Autistic Entrepreurship

What do we mean by autistic entrepreneurship and how does it work?

7 years ago we started on this journey getting autistic and neurodivergent people into either employment or identifying further educational needs.

We have been very successful in this largely due to intensive 1-2-1 working, coaching and mentoring. We have achieved 92% success rates which seem a bit far-fetched but an initiative in the year 2000 trialled in Glasgow by the Department of Works & Pensions, called Intermediate Labour Markets, was achieving over 70%, so it shows it can be done.

What has been concerning me lately is the sustainability of this. It appears after 4 or more years unless there is constant hand-holding and guidance, these people tend to relapse.

So we started to look at the solutions. Long-term support is uneconomical and possibly not even a good idea. We then started looking at self-employment as a solution.

I have been self-employed all my life so this does not worry me but to someone new and autistic and/or neurodivergent, it can seem like a bridge too far.

However, we now have a plan to support these people through the initial set up as self-employed as well as provide all the back office support to make this a reality.

We have found a way of using affiliate marketing as the means of generating an income which can be done at an individual's own pace, to their time scale and time-table - if they want to post on Facebook at 3:00am, that is perfectly fine. If they don't feel up to it one day, again that is fine but as long as they can post maybe 3 times a week CONSISTENTLY, that is the key to success.

This can make self-employment a realistic option to a job where you would be building someone else's dream rather than fulfilling your own.  You can read about "My dream" in Design-a-life
